Patrick Kearney

Patrick has over 30 years experience in Buddhist meditation,
in both the Zen and Theravada traditions. Since 1984 he has
trained in vipassana (insight) meditation in the lineage
of Mahasi Sayadaw of Burma. His teachers have included Robert
Aitken Roshi, Christopher Titmuss, Sayadaw U Pandita, Sayadaw
U Lakkhana, Sayadaw U Janaka, John Hale, Sayadaw U Vivekananda
and Sayadaw U Tejaniya.
Patrick teaches retreats, workshops and classes around Australia
and abroad. He teaches both the techniques of meditation and
the theory that underlies them. Understanding both, a student
can become independent and self-directed.

Patrick’s teaching is informed by his background.
He teaches in the lineage of Mahasi Sayadaw, seeking ways to bring
this practice to a contemporary Australian context.
He emphasises the need for a theoretical understanding of the
Buddhadharma as a support for practice.
Only with the mutual support of theory and practice can we begin
to understand the depths of the Buddha’s teaching, and so
apply this teaching to our lives.
